If you are approaching from the Lochmaddy direction follow the main A865 loop road around the island. Follow the signs to Sollas, Berneray and the Sound of Harris Ferry. After approximately three miles you will drive through Blashaval. After a further mile take the narrow road (on the right) signposted to Lochportain and Marine Harvest, Cheesebay. There is a solitary street lamp with a solar panel at the junction.

Follow this minor road for about six miles which weaves and meanders it’s way through a watery landscape of peat bogs, Duns, freshwater lochs, small bays and tidal inlets. As you drop down into Cheesebay the mountains of Harris become visible across the Sound. Take the first road on the right after the cattle grid and the signpost Baigh a Chaise (Cheesebay). The properties are the first on the left.

This is a longer crossing with a journey time of either 5hrs 10mins or 6hrs 40mins if you come via Castlebay on Barra. Cheesebay is about 1hrs drive from Lochboisdale.
